OpenAI and Anthropic are engaged in a rivalry to lower the costs of frontier and lite models for corporate users. This competition has led to a decline in overall business expenditure on artificial intelligence, according to the latest Ramp AI Index, as cheaper and more efficient models at multiple tiers push down the expense of using the technology.

Open source models currently account for less than 5% of total business spend in the sector. The downward trend in spending is driven almost exclusively by the pricing pressure between the two dominant frontier providers rather than a shift toward open source alternatives.
