Users can now automate repetitive tasks in Gemini through a new feature called Skills that is being deployed globally today. The tool allows individuals to save frequent instructions and activate them by typing a "/" in the prompt bar. This functionality replaces Gems as the primary method for tailoring instructions for personal account holders on November 17, at which point Google will automatically migrate existing Gems into the Skills format.

The transition for Workspace business, enterprise, and nonprofit customers occurs in March 2027, followed by education users in June 2027. Skills differ from Gems by allowing users to stack multiple instructions, such as combining a personal writing style with specific brand guidelines, for a single task. While the current version supports reference files like PDFs and images, support for Google Drive files and the ability to share skills will arrive in the coming weeks.
