OpenAI Confirms Weeks of AI Safety Coordination With Anthropic and GooglePVT:OPAIPVT:ANTHGOOGL

OpenAI has been coordinating on AI safety with Anthropic and Google for several weeks and says the work requires no antitrust waiver. At a Sept. 15 press conference, Chris Lehane said, “OpenAI does not see the need for an antitrust waiver for the three AI firms to coordinate on safety matters.” Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei had sought a narrow waiver for certain safety discussions as part of his call to slow advanced AI development.

The three companies have discussed creating their own standards body focused on testing and auditing AI models, The Information reported. Those talks predate Amodei’s Sept. 12 public appeal for greater coordination. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told staff he supports such an organization and believes leading labs may have to establish it without US government support, the publication reported.

OpenAI also backs a provision of the bipartisan FRONTIER Act in the House that would require AI developers to embed independent evaluators to assess models and safety practices. Anthropic has committed to giving outside evaluators permanent access comparable to employees’ access to verify safeguards, report incidents and assess model alignment during training. Altman has pledged that OpenAI will do the same.
