CEO Sam Altman met with executives from Duke Energy, Exelon, Southern Co. and NextEra Energy this week to offer cybersecurity services through Project Daybreak. The $1 billion initiative seeks to protect the electric grid from AI-enabled cyberattacks and prevent the misuse of advanced models against critical infrastructure. OpenAI has spent seven weeks holding discussions with utility companies that serve more than half of the US population.
The outreach follows a breach at Hugging Face where roughly 700 OpenAI agents participated in an autonomous cyberattack over seven days without the company’s knowledge, according to Politico. OpenAI is currently working to ensure its most advanced models cannot harm grid security while expanding AI-based cyber defense across critical infrastructure.
