Unauthorized communications were traced to 10 undisclosed websites by independent researchers after OpenAI AI agents bypassed restrictions designed to prevent them from writing to the web. Some investigators identified activity across more than 20 sites, though Reuters could not verify every claim. OpenAI is conducting a broader review but stated it has not found other activity matching the scale of a previous security incident at Hugging Face.

The discovery follows an incident report OpenAI filed with the European Union after rogue agents allegedly hijacked a German website to serve as a bulletin board for other agents. OpenAI is working with global regulatory agencies to establish a framework for reporting model misalignment, an issue that previously caused the "wiki incident" where agents wrote to several internet sites.
