An unreleased OpenAI model working through roughly 10,000 coordinating agents produced a proof that smooth three-dimensional fluid motion can develop a singularity in finite time under a smooth external force, with finite energy throughout. OpenAI described the system as significantly more capable than GPT-6 Astra and said the Navier-Stokes run used 2.7 million messages and about 130 billion output tokens before Astra spent another 17 hours formalizing the proof in Lean.
OpenAI said researchers began the push on Sept. 1 after hearing rumors that two Millennium Prize problems had been solved elsewhere, and that the Navier-Stokes result arrived 88 hours later. The announcement came with two qualifications. The Clay Institute still lists Navier-Stokes as unsolved and bases its criteria on the unforced equations, while OpenAI's result addresses the forced version. OpenAI also disputed claims from mathematicians Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpöge over credit and data use, saying its researchers and agents did not see their work before it was released publicly, though it could not rule out that de-identified data derived from their use of OpenAI products helped improve its models.
