AI Minister Targets Non Compete Rules After $5B Industry PushGOOGL

Kanishka Narayan is reviewing restrictive employment contracts and lengthy notice periods to identify potential changes to how AI talent is hired and retained in the UK. The Minister of AI is working extremely rapidly on these reforms in response to industry calls for a more fluid labor market, Sifted reports. Narayan's office is auditing current industry practices to determine if changes to notice periods and non-compete clauses are necessary to maintain national competitiveness.

The review follows an open letter from UK AI companies that have collectively raised $5B, which urged the government to remove obstacles stopping professionals from switching roles or launching new firms. These firms aim to align the UK employment landscape with that of US rivals, the Financial Times reports. Supporters of the reform cite the case of Nobel prize winner John Jumper, who was reportedly placed on 12 months of garden leave after leaving DeepMind, as an example of the barriers impeding domestic innovation.
