The specialized GPT-Synopsys model will automate semiconductor design from initial circuit descriptions to the layout of billions of transistors, which could reduce development time by weeks or months. Synopsys CEO Sassine Ghazi said OpenAI is spending hundreds of millions of dollars on post-training to ensure Synopsys's intellectual property is not absorbed into OpenAI's base models. To guarantee the accuracy of the AI's output, the system will use conventional software to check the physics of each generated design.

The collaboration is governed by a multi-year agreement featuring a revenue-sharing framework tied to design performance improvements. OpenAI is licensing electronic design automation (EDA) tools to run on its own infrastructure and integrate with Synopsys AI and Synopsys Autopilot. The platform manages semiconductor workflows including PPA optimization, timing closure and verification, and has already entered early customer engagements.
