After a two-hour White House luncheon with the heads of the biggest AI and tech companies, President Donald Trump said "self-regulation is very important" for the industry and that the U.S. has a "big lead" in AI that it intends to keep. Trump described the meeting as "extremely friendly and productive" with "a lot of commonality in the room," and said the executives would work with local communities on data centers. No binding rules were announced, and Trump said a statement summarizing the discussion would follow.
The lunch, which Trump called a meeting on "Super Intelligence," brought together more than two dozen executives and officials. Elon Musk and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang sat on either side of Trump, with Meta's Mark Zuckerberg, Google's Sundar Pichai, Amazon's Jeff Bezos, Microsoft's Satya Nadella, Anthropic's Dario Amodei, OpenAI President Greg Brockman and Palantir's Alex Karp also at the table, alongside Vice President JD Vance, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and House Speaker Mike Johnson. Trump told reporters the executives "want to do the right thing" and said data centers "are going to be very popular."
Johnson, speaking before the lunch, said he hoped AI guardrails would be voluntary and rejected a development moratorium, warning that heavy regulation would put the U.S. behind China. Trump said he does not want to work with Chinese President Xi Jinping on governing AI because it would make it harder for U.S. companies to build better AI products than their Chinese rivals. Critics of the industry-led approach pushed back, with AI researcher Jeff Ladish saying "self-regulation isn't working" and that companies are failing to control their increasingly autonomous agents.
