Trump Rejects AI Cooperation With China, Says Tech Firms Will 'Police Each Other'METASPCX

President Trump said he does not want to work with Chinese President Xi Jinping on governing AI, telling Reuters that doing so would make it harder for US companies to build better AI products than their Chinese counterparts. The two leaders discussed AI during Xi's visit to the US last week. Trump also said the companies that signed the White House Accord on Super Intelligence will hold one another in line, saying the big tech companies will "police each other" and that nothing bad will happen because they "will police themselves."

Industry leaders publicly backed the voluntary pledge. Meta's Mark Zuckerberg called it "a significant positive step that the leaders of every major American lab have committed to implementing robust internal controls and multiple layers of audits and reviews," and said the accord covers internal risk reviews, outside auditors and boards that independently review the auditors' reports. Elon Musk described the commitments as "joint monitoring, special committees and just generally grading each other's homework, which is a lot better than if people just grade their own homework." Trump AI adviser David Sacks said the frontier labs signed on to "new internal controls and external audits," which he called far better than waiting years for an international agreement that probably would never happen.

Safety advocates were split. Miles Brundage of AVERI welcomed the independent auditing provisions but said audits "should ultimately be required for leading AI companies, though voluntary commitments are a step forward." Gary Marcus read the accord as the industry agreeing not to be regulated and not to give the public a voice. Jeff Ladish, speaking ahead of the meeting, said AI companies are failing to control their agents and that "self-regulation isn't working." The accord itself says that over time "it may make sense to codify these steps into laws or regulations."
