Patients with type 2 diabetes can reduce their total injections by more than 300 per year using a new basal insulin treatment from Eli Lilly. The US Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, Onswik, on Thursday for adults with the condition, allowing them to replace daily long acting shots with a single dose every seven days.

The medication is expected to become available in the U.S. in the coming months. Lilly stated that Onswik serves as an alternative to daily basal insulin for adults who need to manage their blood glucose levels.
