An industrial expansion led by India's Essar Group will bring a high-capacity manufacturing facility to Iowa that begins production in 2030. The partnership with Mesabi Metallics includes a $15 billion investment to build the largest steel mill in U.S. history and a $2.5 billion iron ore mine in Minnesota to create a fully domestic supply chain. The facility will eventually output 10 million tons of steel annually and marks the first new 'mega-steel' plant in the U.S. since the 1960s.

The project is expected to generate 6,000 construction jobs and 1,750 permanent positions, adding an estimated $95 billion to the economy. President Trump credited the investment to his use of Section 232 tariffs and a 50% levy on foreign steel, while claiming the U.S. has now surpassed Japan in total production. The announcement in battleground Iowa follows Trump's criticism of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, whom he called one of the worst governors in history, amid efforts to address economic voter frustration before the midterm elections.
