Meta's Poach of MongoDB CEO Sinks Software SectorMETAMDBDDOGORCL

Shares of Meta declined nearly 5% on Monday after the social media company announced a new business unit targeting corporate AI customers. To head the expansion, Meta hired Chirantan "CJ" Desai, who resigned as the sitting chief executive of MongoDB to become Meta's Chief Enterprise Platform Officer. The aggressive move triggered a broader software selloff, with Datadog shares falling 3.8% and Oracle dropping 3.4% as Meta begins selling its Muse AI models and corporate agents directly to firms and developers.

The sudden departure of Desai, who had served as MongoDB's CEO for only 11 months, caused the database company's shares to plunge as much as 26% on the eve of its scheduled investor day. The crash wiped roughly $8B from MongoDB's market capitalization, while Desai reportedly forfeited a $32M equity grant to join the raid. Former CEO Dev Ittycheria has returned as interim chief for MongoDB, which reaffirmed its financial guidance for the third quarter and fiscal 2027.
