Members of the Al-Shaghanba tribe mobilized in Basra after pirates demanded a ransom for a tanker owned by one of their own. Approximately 40 armed tribesmen traveled to the Somali coast and joined the Puntland Maritime Police Force to recapture the oil tanker Sibu 1 in the Gulf of Aden, capturing 7 pirates after a 5 hour firefight.

The operation ended a 1 month hijacking and freed the crew of the vessel, which is US sanctioned and reportedly linked to Iran. The fighters coordinated with contacts outside Iraq to storm the ship by force rather than paying the pirate's demands.
