An explosion at a gas transmission pipeline between Al-Shola and Deir ez-Zor stopped gas flow from the Jbeissa plant to power stations on Sept 28. The Syrian Petroleum Company stated the blaze in the east of the country was caused by the explosion of a shut-off valve resulting from sabotage.

Emergency teams have so far failed to contain the widespread fire hours after the initial blast occurred near the Iraqi border. The Syrian state news agency and the state petroleum company are managing the response as the pipeline outage persists.
