Total Power Outage Shuts ExxonMobil 264,000 BPD Joliet Refinery

Emergency flaring occurred at a fuel facility in Illinois on Sunday after a complete electricity failure halted operations. ExxonMobil is investigating the cause of the disruption at its Joliet plant, which processes 264,000 BPD. This outage adds to regional supply constraints, as the BP refinery in Whiting, Indiana, is also partially down for maintenance.

The loss of refining volume poses a risk of price spikes for spot and retail fuel in the Great Lakes region, although a seasonal transition to winter gasoline typically mitigates some market pressure. Unplanned disruptions have become more frequent as the global refining fleet runs at maximum utilization, forcing operators to minimize or defer essential maintenance.
