France Proposes 100 Million Barrel Reserve Release Amid US Diesel Ban Threat

France proposed releasing 50 million barrels of diesel from European reserves and 50 million barrels of crude oil across International Energy Agency members, a source familiar with the discussions said. The proposal comes as Washington presses Europe to release emergency fuel stocks or face a potential US diesel export ban.

EU countries discussed the US demand and export ban threat at a meeting Friday. Washington previously requested 120 million barrels of diesel over six months, Reuters reported, and directed its pressure at France and Germany, which hold more than a third of the bloc’s strategic diesel reserves.

EU Energy Commissioner Dan Jørgensen said Europe is discussing when to release diesel with all IEA members, not only the US. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said Thursday he was “highly confident” Europe would release stocks, while President Donald Trump has kept an export ban under consideration despite acknowledging it could raise gasoline prices.
