Iran rejected President Donald Trump's claim that negotiations with the US would resume this week. The Fars news agency, which is linked to the Revolutionary Guard, said the goal of Trump's claims and US media reports about negotiations was "to prevent an increase in oil prices, which would benefit Trump ahead of the US elections." Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Iran stands ready for diplomacy but is fully prepared for the war to resume, "even if it comes to a doomsday war." Oil rebounded more than 1% after Trump rejected Iran's proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, reversing part of a slide driven by last week's truce hopes.

Trump publicly confirmed Saturday that he had rejected Iran's seven day ceasefire proposal. "They made a proposal, but I rejected it," he told reporters at the White House, saying Iran wanted a deal "where they open the strait immediately because they're losing so badly" and that the US has "total control" of the waterway. He told Axios on Sunday that he expects US negotiators to hold more talks with Iran this week, with regional sources saying another round of indirect negotiations could begin as early as Monday. Iran's state news agency IRNA reported that the delegation in New York has no new negotiations on its agenda and is awaiting Washington's response to proposals conveyed through Qatar, and that Araghchi is due to leave New York on Tuesday.

Araghchi, speaking on NBC's Meet the Press, said Iran was still waiting for an official US response through mediators despite Trump's remarks. Under the plan, the US would take certain steps within four or five days, the strait would reopen on the sixth day and talks on a final agreement would begin on the seventh. "It is up to President Trump to choose," he said. He rejected US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz's description of the plan as a cynical attempt, saying the conditions "are not new" and mirror the June memorandum of understanding that collapsed amid renewed fighting. Iran's stockpile of uranium enriched to 60% could be considered in future negotiations if Washington showed goodwill, he added.
