▶President Donald Trump formally committed Seoul to a series of strategic energy projects including a long-stalled pipeline to export natural gas from the North Slope. The investment total is $200B and includes the construction of eight nuclear reactors and a $22.3B gas-fired power facility with 6.5 GW capacity in Encinal, Texas. This agreement represents the first tranche of a larger $350B investment pledge made by South Korea under a trade deal last year, with $54B of the current package earmarked for the Alaska LNG venture to serve Asian markets.
The timing of the announcement aligns with tightening Senate races in Alaska five weeks before the midterms. While White House officials claim the plan will generate thousands of jobs and lower costs for Americans, critics in Seoul have described the terms of the trade deal as "unbelievably unfair." Some projects, including the specific site and scale of the nuclear reactors, remain under discussion according to Reuters.
