Soaring diesel prices in the US have prompted Washington to seek ways to lower costs at the pump without triggering a global energy crisis. Energy Secretary Chris Wright told the UN General Assembly that the administration will pursue voluntary restrictions on diesel exports instead of a mandatory ban. Wright said the goal is to shift the price trajectory for US consumers while maintaining global supplies, calling the approach an alternative to a "blunt hammer" of government policy that ignores refining complexities.

The proposal has raised concerns among industry lobbyists that coordinating restrictions among refiners could violate antitrust laws. Market analysts warn that limited export opportunities may force refineries to reduce total output, which could inadvertently drive up domestic gasoline costs. These prospects already sent European gasoil prices higher, while fuel access in the Canadian Maritimes, British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec may be jeopardized as regional capacity remains offline.
