The White House is holding talks on a possible US diesel export ban as Republicans warn of voter anger over fuel costs and oil companies resist restrictions, the Financial Times reported Wednesday. The discussions come ahead of November’s midterm elections after retail diesel prices reached a record $6.53 a gallon this month, increasing costs for farmers and transportation companies.

President Donald Trump said Sunday that a ban remains under serious consideration: “We may do it.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said last week that officials were examining whether a full or partial ban would be feasible given refining capacity. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has opposed a blanket ban, favoring a “simpler, voluntary, cooperative fashion” of increasing domestic diesel supply. Oil companies warn that export restrictions could force refiners to cut production and raise gasoline and jet fuel prices.

Officials have also explored expanding access to tax-exempt dyed diesel, normally reserved for off-road use, and encouraging states to eliminate diesel excise taxes. The continuing discussions contrast with growing confidence among EU officials that Washington will hold off on an export ban. Britain is privately seeking an exemption from any restrictions.
