Interior Secretary Doug Burgum stated a new agreement with Venezuela allows the United States to replenish its strategic reserves at a lower cost. The arrangement enables the refill of the Strategic Petroleum Reserve at prices as low as $30 to $40 per barrel.

The deal was cut recently under President Trump to advance energy independence in the Western Hemisphere. Burgum described the shift as turning a geopolitical liability into a low-cost insurance policy for the country.
