1 Bitget Records $463M Net Outflows After $388M Security Breach↩︎ 🪙 Crypto Sep 28, 3:13 AM EDT 64/23
Users rapidly moved assets off the exchange's platform starting Monday as the company began a staggered process of restoring access to accounts. Net withdrawals totaled approximately $463M in the first 24 hours after Bitget resumed Bitcoin transfers at 8:00 UTC on September 28. The firm restores access to Ethereum on Tuesday and USDT on Wednesday, with all other assets and fiat accounts returning by Oct 2 following a $388M security breach last week.
CEO Gracy Chen stated the exploit targeted a zero-day vulnerability in a third-party security product to steal credentials and issue fraudulent withdrawal commands. The attacker ran two test transfers below risk-control thresholds 30 minutes before draining hot wallets, though cold wallets and private keys remained secure. Analyst ZachXBT reports that Chinese actors are now laundering the funds for alleged North Korean attackers via mixing services. To mitigate the loss, NEAR Intents' SHIELD system blocked over $50M in attempted transfers and froze $503,000, while the User Protection Fund will be replenished within a week to cover all user losses.
