1 NEAR Intents Blocks Over $50M in Bitget Hack Transfers as THORChain Refuses 🪙 Crypto Sep 24, 5:38 PM EDT 233/54
NEAR Intents blocked more than $50 million in transfers linked to Bitget's $387.5 million hack, while the attacker converted 2,390 stolen ETH into 75 BTC through THORChain in 27 swaps on Sept. 28. THORChain has refused the crypto exchange's request to block publicly identified attacker addresses.
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen highlighted NEAR Intents' approach of adding transaction screening without changing the underlying blockchain's permissionless design. She criticized THORChain for halting its network when it was itself attacked but declining her request. “When it's them being the victim, they can shut down the system. And when it's not them, when it's us, they just refuse,” Chen said in an Unchained interview.
THORChain said its halt mechanism protects the protocol as a whole rather than blocking individual transactions. “A halt is not a selective freeze of specific funds or an individual swap,” it said. Automatic safeguards and coordinated action by node operators halted its network after a $10.7 million exploit in May, but THORChain said it did not blacklist attacker addresses even then.
