Cornell Hearing Officer Surfed Web During Rape Testimony Report Finds

A new investigation by Sohrab Ahmari and Valerie Reads claims Cornell University used a "shockingly one-sided" disciplinary process to penalize the 7 students accused of gang rape. The report alleges that one university hearing officer spent time driving and surfing the web during testimony, indicating a lack of oversight in the administration's internal handling of the cases.

The findings add to the controversy surrounding a 2024 incident involving members of the Chi Phi fraternity and a former student. New York prosecutors have reopened the criminal probe after a civil lawsuit was filed in September 2026, supported by a police transcript in which the accuser stated she was "100% confident" she was raped. However, opposing claims and statements from some lawyers suggest the woman previously told police in 2024 that the encounters were consensual. Cornell expelled 2 students and required the others to write essays, though the school has defended its disciplinary range.
