FBI and Coast Guard Board Oil Tanker in Cyberattack Probe of 2 Energy Ships

Federal investigators and military personnel inspected a Texas bound vessel on Tuesday as part of an investigation into suspected digital strikes. The US Coast Guard and FBI are probing cyberattacks on at least 2 foreign oil and LNG tankers that occurred in August while passing through the Strait of Gibraltar. These attacks compromised operational and IT systems, which officials said created risks of navigation failures, collisions, explosions or oil spills.

US authorities performed the inspections after the ships arrived in the Gulf of Mexico. The FBI is examining possible links to Iran or other adversaries, although the US has not yet confirmed whether Russia, China or another actor was responsible. The vessels were carrying oil and gas cargoes when the intrusions occurred.
