Personal records for thousands of individuals, including the spouses of bureau employees, were compromised in a targeted cyberattack. Hacking group ShinyHunters claims it stole 2TB to 3TB of data from the FBI's hiring portal, including Social Security numbers for nearly all current and former employees and job applicants. A sample of 5,000 files shared with the media exposed the residential addresses and phone numbers of the Remote Operations Unit, the secretive division responsible for building exploits to breach target devices.

The FBI is investigating the incident and coordinating with third-party providers to determine if the access occurred through an outside vendor or an internal flaw. The attackers described the breach as retaliation for a May FBI alert that profiled their group and contained what they call false allegations. A retired special agent told Fox News Digital that while personnel data was taken, there is no current evidence that the attackers gained access to classified investigative systems.
