The Druskininkai Branch Line, an abandoned railway ending at the Lithuanian border, has been restored by Belarus alongside the construction of a road extending from the tracks toward the border. Originally built in 1934, the branch connects Porechye to the Warsaw-St. Petersburg railway, though the Lithuanian portion of the link was abandoned in 2000. The restoration is located near the Suwałki Gap, the narrow corridor separating Belarus from Russia's Kaliningrad region.

Lithuania has reinforced the nearby Latežeris border crossing with anti-tank "dragon's teeth" and other engineering obstacles under the Baltic Defence Line project. The crossing has remained closed since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. New Belarusian infrastructure near the border includes sites that may contain Soviet period structures, drawing attention to transport links connecting the Baltic states to the rest of NATO by land.
