The Seimas of Lithuania approved a proposal to scrap the constitutional prohibition on weapons of mass destruction and foreign military installations on its soil. Lawmakers passed the consideration stage of the amendment 99 to 13, with five abstentions, to delete Article 137 of the national constitution. The existing text prohibits any nuclear weapons or foreign bases from being located within the territory of the country.

Final adoption of the measure requires two additional votes, with a minimum of 94 of 141 members of parliament required for each. The first adoption vote occurs October 6, followed by a final vote on January 12, 2027. Approval of the amendment would remove the legal barrier to hosting nuclear weapons but does not authorize the immediate deployment of such arsenals.
