General Carsten Breuer won a secret vote by a majority of NATO's top generals on Sept. 19 to head the alliance's highest military authority. The Chief of Defence of the Bundeswehr assumes the role of Chair of the NATO Military Committee in July 2027.

The current chair noted that the Chiefs of Defence elected Breuer during a demanding period for Euro-Atlantic security. The International Military Staff and the Committee provide support to the German general through the transition period until the formal handover.
