A US resolution seeking to extend the mandate of the Panel of Experts supporting the 1737 Iran Sanctions Committee was blocked by Russia and China on Thursday. The panel is responsible for monitoring the implementation of United Nations sanctions on Tehran and reporting potential violations to the Security Council.

Russian envoy Vasily Nebenzya stated the session lacked a legal basis, citing the Oct 18, 2025 expiry of Security Council Resolution 2231. Moscow and Beijing maintained that the Security Council's review of Iran's nuclear file has concluded, meaning the request to extend the sanctions monitor's mandate was procedurally invalid.
