Spain has refused to increase its military spending to 5% of GDP to avoid fueling global conflicts, Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez told the UN General Assembly. During his speech on September 24, Sánchez labeled the Israeli military campaign in Gaza a "genocide" and stated that Spain has implemented an arms embargo against Benjamin Netanyahu's government. He noted that Spain has consistently opposed wars in Ukraine, Lebanon, and Iran over the past eight years to uphold the UN Charter.

Sánchez urged the UN to reform its Security Council by abolishing veto powers and establishing fairer representation for various regions to hold aggressors accountable. The Prime Minister also highlighted Spain's use of sanctions against Russia and its prohibition of the use of Spanish territory for military deployments that violate international law.
