US President Donald Trump and Venezuelan interim President Delcy Rodriguez discussed energy and security cooperation on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. The interaction was the first meeting between the two since American forces captured former President Nicolas Maduro in a January raid. Both leaders focused on strengthening bilateral ties to improve diplomatic relations between Washington and Caracas.

Rodriguez described the talks as a historic event and credited the Trump administration for providing assistance after June 24 earthquakes. She also stated that the US is supporting Venezuela's reintegration into multilateral forums as part of a shift toward forging a new stage of relations through dialogue.
