President Donald Trump announced an agreement with Denmark and Greenland to expand the US military presence on the island and give Washington authority to block adversaries’ bases and sensitive investments. Trump said the deal grants the US “permanent control over security, and all other needs” in Greenland, while Denmark and Greenland stressed that it preserves sovereignty and the right to self-determination.

The Danish and Greenlandic governments said they expect to sign the agreement next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. It still requires parliamentary approval in both Denmark and Greenland before taking effect. Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen said the pact “recognizes the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of both nations, stopping short of Trump’s earlier ambition to acquire the island.

A State Department official said the agreement bans bases and troops from countries outside NATO, including China and Russia, and restricts adversaries’ investments in sensitive sectors. Trump said it has no expiration date and would impose no cost on the US. He said Washington would immediately begin developing a large military presence, working with Greenland’s people on development and construction.
