The United States and the governments of Denmark and Greenland finalized a trilateral agreement at the UN General Assembly granting Washington permanent control over the island's security. The pact allows the U.S. to build 2 military bases in southern and eastern Greenland, specifically at Narsarsuaq and Mestersvig, and expand the existing Pituffik space base. U.S. armed forces and public vessels now have the right of free access and movement through Greenland's land, air, sea, and territorial waters.

The security deal preserves Danish sovereignty while barring non-NATO and non-EU countries from establishing military bases or investing in strategic sectors. In exchange for access with no direct acquisition cost, U.S. contracts for construction and maintenance must go to Greenlandic suppliers to the maximum extent possible. Any future state of Greenland that achieves independence is required to remain a member of NATO under the terms of the agreement.
