1 Algeria Severs UAE Ties and Bans Airspace, Ending Yearlong Diplomatic Downgrade 🌐 Geopolitics Sep 10, 6:42 AM EDT 29/20
An official order issued by Algiers on September 10 required the United Arab Emirates ambassador to vacate the country within 48 hours following a total break in diplomatic relations. The Ministry of Defense banned all UAE-registered civilian and military aircraft from entering or crossing Algerian airspace starting September 11 at 00:00. Commercial flights operated by Emirates to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport are exempt from the restrictions until the expiration of their contract at the end of 2026.
The Algerian government terminated ties with Abu Dhabi after claiming "provocative and hostile actions" had exhausted all means of preserving bilateral relations. Tensions have risen over UAE military expansion in the Sahel and Libya, support for Morocco regarding Western Sahara, and alleged contacts with Kabylie separatist groups. Abu Dhabi responded by expressing hope the move is temporary and stating it seeks to strengthen relations with all countries.
