Bessent Says Iran Is 'On Its Knees' With Only 15 Million Barrels of Oil Left at Sea↩︎

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent declared Iran is "on its knees," saying the US has shut down three banks, cut off Iranian airlines from the world and is targeting crypto wallets under Operation Economic Outcast. He warned remaining facilitators, "We know who you are."

Bessent said only about 15 million barrels of Iranian oil remain on the water and that Iran will probably make its final deliveries to China within two weeks, after which it will have nothing left to trade and its economy will collapse. He added that "the straits are open." The rial appreciated 0.56% against the dollar overnight but has depreciated 2.18% over the week.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi rejected the pressure campaign, writing that independent governments determine their relations with Iran based on their own interests, "not orders from the US Treasury," and that the era of imposing demands through threats and sanctions is "coming to an end." China, Iran's largest remaining aviation market, continues to accept Iranian flights: a Mahan Air aircraft landed in Guangzhou after the sanctions took effect, and the carrier was still flying cargo from China to Tehran at double its prewar rate this month. Iran's Supreme National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, warned neighboring countries against restricting Iranian flights, saying, "Your airports will have no flights."
