EU and France Welcome Potential UK Return to Bloc

The European Commission has confirmed it will engage with any framework the British government proposes to resolve its post-Brexit status. French President Emmanuel Macron stated that the UK would be welcome back in the European Union if it chooses to return, following an announcement by Prime Minister Andy Burnham that the UK will review its ties with the bloc. Burnham's proposed options for the relationship range from entering a customs union or the single market to regaining full membership.

Burnham will lay out these options at a UK-EU summit scheduled for later this year, asserting that Brexit has "done more harm than good." This shift represents a reversal from Labour's 2024 manifesto, which had explicitly ruled out rejoining the EU or its single market. Any resulting policy changes would likely appear in the party's next election manifesto, with the next general election potentially 3 years away. UK carbon prices surged following the Prime Minister's pledge to rebuild ties.
