The United States and China conducted their inaugural formal discussions on artificial intelligence during a three day diplomatic summit in the capital that began September 23. President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping agreed to extend their trade truce until January 10, 2027, to avoid immediate escalation over disputes involving Taiwan, technology restrictions and rare earths. The talks also addressed the war with Iran and China's role in the Ukraine conflict.

Trump greeted Xi on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews with a 100 foot red carpet and flyovers by B-1B Lancer bombers, a gesture for a visiting leader not seen since 1962. While Trump described Xi as "strong, vibrant, and fit," Reuters reports that the Chinese leader enters the meeting from a position of strength given his secure domestic power. The visit marks Xi's first official state visit to Washington since 2015.
