Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were among US officials who met an Iranian delegation for three hours Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Donald Trump said. He called the meeting “very productive” and said another was “scheduled in the very near future.”

Earlier Tuesday, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran could reopen the Strait of Hormuz within seven days if Washington eased military pressure and lifted its blockade of Iranian ports. The proposal was delivered through mediators on Sept. 16, and Iran’s delegation in New York had full authority to revive diplomacy, the official said. Brent and US crude futures fell more than 1% after Kyodo reported the offer.

Trump continued to threaten Iran while discussing the talks. “In one case it's obliteration and the other alternative is potential greatness. It could be a great country,” he said. In his UN address earlier Tuesday, he predicted a deal after the US midterm elections and called on other nations to economically isolate Iran.
