Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated China blocked the statement due to a dispute over its trade surplus and concerns regarding maritime transit in the Strait of Hormuz. China later warned that this obstruction threatens upcoming high level meetings, though Bessent and Greer will meet a Chinese vice premier in early September.
