UAE Opens Inquiry Into Possible Terrorism in Flydubai Cockpit Attack

The UAE’s prosecutor general opened an inquiry into the Flydubai cockpit attack to examine a possible connection to “terrorist activity,” the state news agency reported. Israeli officials allege the co-pilot stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar and tried to crash flight FZ1073 from Dubai to Tel Aviv before passengers and crew subdued him. The aircraft, carrying 174 passengers, landed safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu identified the suspect as an Omani national being interrogated in Saudi Arabia and said he assumed the suspect would be moved quickly to Dubai. Israel will participate in the investigation, he said, while any Iranian involvement remains unclear. Flydubai has suspended flights to and from Israel during the inquiry and says the motive remains unknown. Passengers returned to Israel aboard a replacement aircraft.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Machchhar “prevented another 9/11” and added, “India is praying for him.” The captain remains in hospital in Tabuk and is reported to be in stable condition, India’s embassy said. Despite his wounds, he opened the cockpit door, enabling passengers and crew to intervene, Netanyahu said. Israeli President Isaac Herzog will recommend the President’s Medal for Civilian Heroism for four passengers who helped subdue the attacker: Yaniv Hayon, Dr. Shota Musaev, Tzvika Mans and Assaf Rejwan.
