The U.S. State Department notified Congress on Sept. 17 of a possible foreign military sale to Saudi Arabia for 48 F-35A fighter jets and 49 F135 engines. The proposed package includes weapons support and training at an estimated total cost of $24.3 billion, marking the first purchase of the stealth aircraft by the kingdom.

The approval follows reports that U.S. intelligence agencies raised concerns over potential technology theft by China. A Pentagon Defense Intelligence Agency report questioned the kingdom's ability to protect the aircraft, citing Chinese access to Saudi facilities and the use of Chinese telecommunications equipment.

State Department officials characterized the deal as essential for the security of a major non-NATO ally, stating the sale will not alter the regional military balance. Similar intelligence concerns over ties with China previously delayed a proposed F-35 sale to the UAE.
