The White House blocked imports of Canadian vehicles, dairy and alcohol products on Tuesday as part of a widening trade dispute with Ottawa. The ban targets roughly $1 billion in imports, including motorcycles and mopeds with petrol engines larger than 800cc, whey, molasses, and spirits such as whiskey and vodka. President Trump told reporters in the Oval Office that a trade deal is likely because Canada wants one, though other officials sent mixed signals. Analysts note that US shoppers may not feel the immediate impact as distributors stockpiled Canadian alcohol before the ban took effect.

The escalation follows a decline in US automotive market share in Canada, which fell to 28.4% in the first half of 2026 from 35.4% the previous year. This decline was sparked by a 25% US levy on Canadian cars and corresponding Canadian counter-tariffs. Since January 2025, the US has lost approximately 75,000 manufacturing jobs, including 25,900 in the vehicle and parts sector, while GM and Stellantis reported billions in losses. Canada remains the largest US auto export market with more than $100 billion in annual trade.
