Washington will reopen a Cold War installation in southern Greenland and build a new site on the east coast. Signed September 22 with Denmark and Greenland, the agreement grants the US permanent control over the territory's security. The eastern base occupies land previously utilized by the Danish dog sled patrol.

The pact was finalized on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. President Donald Trump described the "infinite life" arrangement as having no cost to US taxpayers and prohibiting Russian or Chinese military presence. Denmark and Greenland retain sovereignty, though the US holds permanent veto power over sensitive foreign investments on the island.
