Perdue said Washington does not support Taiwan independence or coercion, and that Trump and Xi discuss Taiwan arms sales at every meeting.

The remarks cap a summit in which Xi pressed for a one-word shift in the US stance. China's readout says Xi wants the US to "oppose" Taiwan independence rather than merely "not support" it, wording Taipei called a distortion, saying only Taiwan's people can decide their future. Trump played down the exchanges, saying, "We didn't talk about it too much. Right now it's, you know, fine. It's just moving along."

Taiwan's representative to the US urged faster weapons deliveries, calling the island's chip industry an important part of its security ties with Washington. Beyond a $30 billion reciprocal tariff reduction and a new communication channel for AI incidents, the summit produced little movement, said Ian Bremmer, who wrote that the relationship "hasn't moved a bit" beyond a two month trade truce extension and the panda loan to Zoo Atlanta.
