Turkey Detains 15 and Freezes Fund Assets After ₺1.6 Trillion Stock Wipeout
📈 Global Markets Sep 21, 3:30 AM EDT 9/5
Turkish authorities seized assets linked to executives at investment firms and detained suspects in connection with shares of Katilimevim. A total of 15 people are now in custody following a ₺1.6 trillion wipeout in the stock market over 12 days. The crisis triggered redemption failures and a 10% weekly drop in shares, marking the worst weekly crash for the market since March 2025.
Regulators ordered the liquidation of 131 funds and extended the winding-down period from 3 to 6 months to contain the damage. Tera Portfoy is working to repay investors as prosecutors examine a 'Ponzi-like scheme' and market manipulation involving 38 people, including one of Turkey's richest individuals, Altunc Kumova.
