The chief executive of Apple is redesigning the company's hierarchy to reduce the distance between engineers and senior leadership. John Ternus has already cut a large number of engineering program managers within the hardware division, including 6 directors, as part of a push to shorten product development timelines and create a leaner, engineering-focused organization.

The overhaul involves shifting away from traditional spring and fall launch calendars to release products more frequently and increase revenue from existing services. While Apple recently canceled a planned mass layoff of approximately 5,000 AppleCare employees, staff members expect further job cuts in the coming months as managers are pressured to deliver devices on shorter timelines.
