Discord Deploys AI Age Verification to Sort All Users Into 3 Groups

The company's new age-assurance rollout on Wednesday partitions users into adults, teens, or unconfirmed status using metadata from account activity. Discord's internal model analyzes account history and signals to determine age, though it does not read chats, calls, or direct content. While more than 90% of users will not be required to provide manual confirmation, teens are now subject to default filters that blur sensitive content and block access to age-restricted servers and channels.

Users misclassified as minors must submit a video selfie, ID scan, or credit card to regain access to adult spaces. This transition occurs less than one year after a vendor breach exposed the ID photos of about 70,000 Discord users. The system is currently unavailable in the UK and Australia.
