1 Tesla Boosts AI5 RAM to 96GB After Initial Cut for OptimusTSLA π» Tech Oct 1, 3:51 PM EDT 15/12
Elon Musk modified the specification for the AI5 processor's memory capacity to ensure the hardware did not use the minimum available version of LP5 RAM. The chip now features 96GB of memory, a slight increase from the 72GB limit Musk announced on October 1. The initial decision to halve the AI5 RAM to 72GB was made to lower production costs and secure sufficient component supply for the mass manufacture of Optimus humanoid robots.
Tesla also cut the memory for its AI6 chip by one third to 144GB of LP6 to avoid supply bottlenecks. These adjustments will have a negligible effect on the performance of the Optimus robots because memory bandwidth is a larger limiting factor than total storage, Musk said. The company held memory bandwidth constant during these reductions to maintain the processing efficiency of the hardware.
